I really, really loved it.

It’s both a sparingly-written account of a human-derived AI that self-propogates into the unverse, and a fun, goofy take on hard sci-fi. The crux of the story is that Bob, a human in modern times, well, dies. He’s cryogenically frozen and then awakes 130 years in the future as a disembodied AI. His brain has been (destructively) scanned into a special matrix that runs his consciousness. Humanity hasn’t figured out how to create an AGI exactly, but we have figured out how to house a human intelligence in silicon.

And Bob is the reason this works. He’s a little smug, and quite clever and curious, but he’s also a doofus, and the author does what the best writers of hard sci-fi do, which is think around corners in a way that manages to be surprising and yet completely coherent.

It’s not quite The Expanse or Project Hail Mary, but it plays in a similar sandbox and is well worth a read.
