Scientific inaccuracies of Project Hail Mary
A take from Hank Green about what was wrong and why it (probably) doesn't matter.
YouTuber and all-round good guy Hank Green put out this video today on the science mistakes in Project Hail Mary, some of which I had noticed, and others I hadn’t.
I twigged the centrifuge thing right away, not based on any lab experience, but this video I watched years ago on the algorithm lab techs use to space out samples in a centrifuge to ensure they’re balanced.
I agree with his ultimate point which is something I noted in my own viewing, which is that the filmmakers have intentional eschewed the scientific detail in favour of emotional storytelling, relying on the work done in the book to give the story some factual rigour, and given how much I enjoyed the movie, I think that was the right call.
