Toy Story 5

Toys are for play, but tech is for everything

Nathalie and I have both been pushing ourselves away from Big Tech over time, and recently when we were watching the newest trailer for Toy Story 5, a character says “Toys are for play, but tech is for everything.” We both looked at each other. WTF.

The push against Big Tech is getting louder and louder, but there’s still something kind of surreal about Pixar, a studio bootstrapped to success by Steve Jobs, creating basically an attack against one of Apple’s flagship products. The Lily Pad isn’t an iPad, but that seems like a purely legal distinction, when the swoopy “Hi!” is so evocative of Apple’s original Macintosh, on a background that’s almost exactly MacOS Big Sur:

What the message of the film actually is remains to be seen. In these dark days of cabals of billionaires conspiring against the rest of us, it maybe doesn’t pay to give Disney too much benefit of the doubt here, but with the marketing leaning so much into “screen panic” (which is a mixed bag of real issues and manufactured ones), it would be a real bait and switch for them to back away from it.
