(Better) 2D coming to Unity 3D

Good news everyone (who cares about 2D game development)!

Unity 3D – Bucky LonelyBot

Unity 3D, the multiplatform game engine and development environment is adding native 2D support.

"Why does that matter to me, a potato salesman with a past?"

It shouldn't, you're not my demographic, but I'll try to sexplain.

"What?"

Sorry, that was a typo.

Unity 3D is a piece of software that game developers use to create computer games and other interactive experiences. A lot of indie games are made with it because it is cheap and flexible, and you can write your game once and then compile copies that will run on iOS, Android, web, PC, Mac, Wii, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 369 etc. It's a dream to work with in 3D.

"Isn't our universe in 3D? When I pick up a Kerr's Pink potato and throw it at my own face, I can see it move in three dimensions."

Yes, excellent, but a lot of great games like FTL or 10000000 are in 2D. The latter was actually created in Unity 3D using workarounds.

"That sounds awful boring. Can I leave please? I have to sell potatoes so my children can eat something other than potatoes."

Sure thing. Just watch the video below for a rundown of the full feature list, including:

  • New Sprite type, with an editor that will auto slice your 2D graphics for you
  • Upgraded Animation window with Dopesheet style view and quicker parameter animation
  • Integration with the Animator to easily create states for 2D animated characters
  • An integrated 2D physics engine with rigidbodies, colliders, joints
