Cory Doctorow has a wonderful explanation for the slew of AI bosses and workers screaming to the (still, frustratingly uncritical press) about the danger of autonomous digital life exterminating all of us, and it’s reassuringly mundane.
Everybody wants to be important. You, me, and everyone else, we all want to be the heroes of our own stories.
He cites a study that preppers often don’t prep for the likeliest scenario, but prep for the specific apocalypse in which they could be the most useful. “Wouldn’t it be great if I got to save everyone”.
It’s a great watch.
